The author, Earl Swift, produced a complex and beautifully written book by spending 14 months living among the watermen on the tiny, isolated crabbing town just south of the Maryland/Virginia state line.īut it’s not just a book about Chesapeake culture. That would make Tangiermen some of America’s first climate change refugees. Chesapeake Requiem is a new book about the culturally rich and historically unique community of watermen on Tangier Island in the southern Chesapeake Bay and how sea-level rise may soon wash it all away. ![]() ![]() ![]() Whenever Greg wakes up Santa's Scout is in a new place which he thinks is supposed to mean he traveled to the North Pole but he's starting to think it's just Rodrick moving him. Everyone is called to be remade into the comprehension and participation of the creation and Resurrection.īut as St. Lent, as a time of penance and self-examination, should be viewed as an awakening out of a wintry night into the Eastern dawn of the world and the Word. In spring men enjoy a lengthening of days, increasing light, and an unveiling, or even remaking, of the world. The word “Lent” is rooted in a word for springtime. ![]() (Romans 6:3-4)īurial with Christ in baptism is part of the Christian experience, and provides a fitting reflection for Lent. Know you not that all we, who are baptized in Christ Jesus, are baptized in his death? For we are buried together with him by baptism into death that as Christ is risen from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we also may walk in the newness of life. The interconnectivity of life and death, however, is paramount to any understanding of Christianity-which understanding is beautifully portrayed in a well-known tale by Hans Christian Andersen. Just as baptism and burial are seldom associated with one another, neither are a duckling and the Resurrection. ![]() ![]() ![]() These italicized “voices” Adelina deals with in the book is such an interesting angle to work with. ![]() As a reader, we’ve gotten to know Adelina’s inner demons and at some parts they are oddly terrifying. It’s so cool to be able to do this with a character. Near the end of the book, Adelina and the elites enter this weird ethereal underworld setting. She makes me want to visit this renaissance Italy themed world. Midnight Star takes place in it’s own world and she describes this strange world so vividly. Specifically, I love how descriptive her writing is. I mean, she killed it with her Legend series and did it again with the Young Elites. Marie Lu is definitely one of my favourite YA authors. The journalist Christopher Caldwell said in The American Spectator: ‘Whoredom in Kimmage is an exquisitely funny book-and it is the only funny feminist book.’ I can’t say whether it was the only funny one, but I can say that the humor in the book is due far more to the people I wrote about than it is to me. The humor and verve and linguistic brilliance of the people who appear in that book is certainly not outdated. “But the work for gender equality isn’t entirely over, and the book still has relevance in a historical sense and as a background to everything that’s happened in the course of one generation. ![]() “I’m delighted that Irish society has changed enough over the past 25 years that my investigation into Irish society in the early ’90s is not so pressingly relevant,” she opined.
